What is the cost to purchase a firearm or receiver

Hand Gun

All Hand Guns are charged Sales Tax for CA based on the purchase price regardless of in person or online purchase. Current tax rate is 9.125%. (August 2021)

All Hand Guns pay DROS $37.19, Cost of Firearm (if purchased directly) + Sales Tax on cost of firearm + $75 transfer fee if applicable.

Note: If the gun does not have a CA compliant locking device included, the purchasee will be required to purchase one at the time of pickup OR provide their own at pickup.

Long Guns

Long guns (and receivers) pay DROS, Cost of Firearm (if purchased directly) + Sales Tax on purchase price.

Effective 1/1/15 all long guns require an FSC or exemption.

Online Transfer

Subject to the same requirements as listed for either Hand Gun or Long Gun, respectively.

Lower Receivers qualify under “Long Guns”.

Transfer fee for any firearm is $75.

Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC)

Firearms Safety Certificates are available. The cost for the booklet and exam is $25.

Private Party Transfers

DROS $25 + $10 Dealer Fee charged to person receiving/purchasing the gun.
